Think of AI as a Brilliant Intern (Not a Genius, Not a Threat)

Most people file AI into one of two boxes. Either it's a genius that will soon run everything, or it's a threat coming for their staff and their business. Both boxes lead to bad decisions. One leads to blind trust, the other to paralysis.

There's a third box that's far more accurate and far more useful. Picture AI as an intern.

Meet your new intern

This intern is genuinely impressive. They've read millions of documents. They work at a speed no human can match. They never get tired, never need a break, and they write beautifully, clean and structured and professional, every time.

And this intern has real limitations. They don't understand your business goals. They don't grasp legal or financial risk. They don't carry accountability for anything. And, this is the important one, they don't know when they're wrong.

Sit with that combination for a second, because it's exactly what AI is. Extraordinary capability and zero judgment, in the same package.

The two questions that decide everything

Now ask yourself two simple questions about this intern.

Would you let them run your business alone? No. Obviously not. Handing full control to someone brilliant who doesn't understand consequences is how you get a confident, beautifully-written disaster.

Would you let them assist you, at speed, under your supervision? Absolutely. Why would you turn down someone who can process a hundred times more information than you can in the same hour? You'd be leaving enormous leverage on the table.

That's the whole model. The answer to "should I use AI?" is almost never a flat yes or no. It's yes, as an assistant, with a human supervising the parts that carry weight.

What this looks like on a normal workday

The intern drafts the customer reply; you approve the ones that are sensitive. The intern summarises the fifty-page report; you make the call it informs. The intern sorts the incoming enquiries; you decide how to handle the tricky one. The intern writes the first version of the proposal; you own the number and the promise inside it.

Notice the pattern. AI carries the volume and the first draft. The human keeps the judgment, the accountability, and the final word. You move faster without handing over the wheel.

Why this framing protects you

The genius framing leads people to trust AI with decisions it has no business making, and they get burned when it's confidently wrong. The threat framing leads people to freeze and fall behind competitors who are quietly getting more done. The intern framing avoids both. It's honest about the capability and honest about the limits, so you capture the upside without taking the downside.

This is also the seed of one of the most important ideas in using AI well: keeping a human in the loop by design. We go deep on that here: Human-in-the-Loop AI: Keep Control Without Slowing Down.

FAQ

What's the simplest way to think about AI in my business?

As a brilliant, tireless intern: fast, well-read, great at drafts and volume, but with no judgment, no accountability and no real understanding. Use it to assist, and keep a human supervising.

Should AI make decisions for my business?

Not consequential ones on its own. Let it prepare, draft and sort; keep the decisions, and the responsibility, with a person.

Isn't an intern too modest a comparison for how powerful AI is?

The power is real. This "intern" outreads and outpaces any human. The comparison is about judgment, not horsepower. Huge capability with zero judgment is precisely the thing to manage.
